Charley Brown penetration
dive briefing:
For those divers who enjoy
exploration of the interior of the
ship we have several different
possibilities. There are levels of
difficulty ranging from entry level
diver to expert wreck diver, your
experience level and training will
be considered before the dive. You
will find that the ship is lying in
the same position as shown on the
schematics and the max depth is 98ft
or 31m and that at the shallowest it
is 50ft or 15m.
Please keep in mind that for the
more technical penetrations special
planning and preparation are
required, schedule permitting, and
there will be additional costs
associated with these preparations.
On the schematic
we have color coded the different
possibilities.
The
Highway: Color Blue
A long corridor running for over
120ft or 40m, at its widest point it
is 21ft or 7m narrowing to 8ft or
6.8. Due to the fact that it is on
its starboard side like in the
schematic you will find that a light
is nice to have but not necessary,
there is ample sunlight coming
through the portholes. This is a
very popular route as it has an open
feeling. Good for almost everyone.
The
Bridge and Chart room: Color Purple
Smaller than the Highway but very
interesting, as much of the
navigation equipment is still in
place. There is no need for a light
with windows all around. Good for
almost everyone.
Cable Tanks and Winch room: Color
Light Green.
Slightly more challenging than the
Highway, less light but still very
open. Below the main deck as you go
forward of the superstructure into
the Cable Winch room where most of
the machinery is in place,
impressive to see. Not for everyone
but doable for the average good
diver, light recommended.
Maine
Engine room: Color Yellow.
This dive is something special for
the more technical diver. On this
dive you will penetrate to the very
bottom of the vessel (without
increasing your actual depth) and
then passing between the two giant
Fiat main engines before heading for
the exit. Additional planning and
special training is required to make
this dive. Not for most divers and
lights are required.
