Why Statia

Statia’s small population and limited number of visitors is what makes the diving and nature so special. The more people there are on an island the less nature you will be able to find. Consider a Caribbean island for the
most part isolated, an oasis for marine life which thrives in depths from
0 to 300 feet dropping away to the abyssal plane. In this relatively small area around the island most of the creatures we have come to love struggle for existence. Add fishing pressure to their struggle due to large populations for inhabitants and visitors and you can imagine how quickly the larger fish are depleted. Once this has taken place the predators will move to new hunting grounds and without the apex predator there can be no complete ecosystem. On Statia we are very proud to have a complete ecosystem, while this doesn’t mean you will always encounter the larger animals that live in this part of the world; it does mean that you will experience things that cannot normally be seen on the more developed islands.

Anyone traveling to see nature must be willing to make an effort, that being said Statia is off the beaten path but not too far, only a 17 minute flight from the International airport in St. Maarten and you are there. Besides the natural under water wonders of the Statia many of our guests enjoy the friendliness and small island charm. Statians are very proud of the abundance of history that makes their home so special. Most of the historical documents have been lost over the centuries but what has taken its place are numerous interpretations of the same history told by the individual, you see on Statia everyone has their own stories. If you ask a historical question in a group of locals you will surely find yourself in the middle of a friendly and sometimes quite loud debate. As the island has limited hotel rooms and not so many visitors so the residents don’t feel overrun, they actually enjoy talking. Statia is one of those places where you will always feel safe and welcome.

Statians enjoy welcoming visitors who come from all over the world to escape the world. Statia is a dream come true: tropical birds, beautiful flowers, historical monuments, a lush rainforest, excellent diving and black sand beaches."
